Julian ★★★★★

I picked this up after hearing it won the National Outdoor Book Award for History/Biography, and it earned it. The chapters on his early Yosemite years had me reading way past midnight.

Nicholas ★★★★★

I picked this up knowing nothing about Jim Donini and finished it in three nights. The writing on his Patagonia and Karakoram expeditions pulls you in, and the book feels well researched rather than just a highlight reel.

Joseph H. ★★★★☆

The sections on his Patagonia and Karakoram expeditions are gripping, and the writing doesn't shy away from the darker parts of a life spent in the mountains. Only gripe is that a few chapters drag with too much logistical detail, but the 2024 National Outdoor Book Award win makes sense. Solid read
